Our Approach – Efficient and Sustainable Use

Install AMR loggers on bulk water supply. This provides us with specific consumption data which we use as the starting point

The logger is retro-fitted on the water meter and measures the volume of water used every hour. With the data in hand, we can start to optimize the four main water consumption areas of most sites.

=

Water Losses

Are there any leaks on site?  With monitoring in place, the possibility of large unforeseen water bills are eliminated.

=

Toilets

Installing Interruptive flushing mechanisms on all the toilets. This prevents the whole cistern from draining each time the toilet is flushed. This not only has a direct impact on the consumption but also on the sewage systems.

=

Taps

Installing flow regulators on all basin taps, reducing the amount of water wasted every time someone washes their hands.

=

Irrigation

Irrigation is often scheduled based on inaccurate information. As a result water is wasted, and repeated maintenance activities increase costs.

Why Focus on Toilets & Taps

A Toilet That Is Visibly Running Can Waste Up To 400 Liters Per Hour

According to the World Health Organization a person needs, on average, a 100 liters of water per day to live a normal life.

If one toilet gets stuck on a Friday afternoon and is left over the weekend, that one toilet wastes 24 000 liters of water, which is enough water for 8 people for an entire month. If the toilet is left for a month the monitory value lost in Johannesburg is R18 355.

When someone washes their hands for the required 20 sec, the normal water loss is 4 liters.  With the flow regulators in place that drops down to 1 liter.

The Power of Data Driven Solutions

Increase in leak volume per hour

Shows the increase in leak volume per hour from a burst pipe.

A large school had a leak, indicated by the high consumption during the evening.

A large school had a leak, indicated by the high consumption during the evening. Working with the cleaning staff and facility manager we shut the water to different parts of the school each night. This enabled us to narrow down the problem areas, giving us the ability to prioritize advanced leak detection. This not only has an obvious financial impact, but it also minimizes disruptions during normal school hours.

Each month a consumption report is generated. The savings is calculated based on the historical average daily use, making it a tangible and measurable effort that can be used in various marketing strategies.

Impact on Water Backup Systems, Septic Tanks, French Drains

The reduction of average daily consumption has a direct impact on the CAPEX and OPEX of any water backup system that might be install. By reducing the volume of water needed you reduce the cost of storage tanks and prolong the life of the pump and filtration.

The reduction of overall consumption has a direct impact on all grey- and black water produced by any home/school/office park. This is especially valuable if there are French drains or septic tanks.

With monitoring in place leaks are detected withing 12 hours which provides piece of mind and provides the estate with the tools to accurately bill each property owner, drastically reducing the non-revenue water of the estate.
By creating awareness through training, you empower people to take ownership of their site broadening the impact we have on our water recourses. We believe this is the only way to make a sustainable rather than a reactionary change to our consumption habits.

We live in uncertain times with the country at a fork in the road. Let’s all play our role in making sure that we rebuild a better and more united country by involving everyone in the preservation of our most precious recourse, let’s reach #surpluswater2025 together.
